What is Qi Gong?

Qi Gong (pronounced chi-kung) is a form of exercise that includes healing posture, movement, self-massage, breathing techniques and meditation. “Qi” is the Chinese term meaning “life energy” and “Gong” is the Chinese term for work, or the benefits acquired through practice. Thus Qi Gong is the practice of learning to cultivate energy. To use a modern metaphor, the body is a battery and we dissipate, maintain or increase its charge through our habits and life style. Stress, anxiety and ill health drain the body of Qi. Moderate practice of Qi Gong recharges the body increasing our reserves of healing energy.

I have been fascinated by Tai Chi and Qi Gong for many years and recently completed a professional training as a Qi Gong instructor with the Shiatsu College, Hastings, one of the leading colleges teaching energy work in the UK.

The emphasis of my classes is to improve health and cultivate tranquillity in the mind. The core of my teaching is a system entitled Tai Chi Qi Gong Shibashi, which consists of sequences of eighteen movements designed to stretch and exercise the musculature and the energy channels that flow through the body and regulate our health and vitality.

How can Qi Gong help you?

Regular practice of Qi Gong strengthens the musculo-skeletal system, improving the strength and tone of the core muscles that, in turn, leads to better posture and more efficient use of the body’s energy. On a more subtle level, the performance of the form cultivates a sense of tranquillity and satisfaction as the mind learns to guide the body effortlessly through each sequence. The Shibashi form is relatively simple and can be learned within a few weeks of regular practice and should take no longer than 15-18 minutes to perform. It is suitable for any age group or level of fitness and requires no special equipment.

Some of my students have described it as an excellent antidote to a stressful day at work, giving the body a gentle, but powerful work-out that allows the body to relax and let go of tension.
